A wind-swept Jeffrey pine (Pinus jeffreyi) atop a granite dome in the Sierra Nevada. Fierce and relentless winds have shaped this specimen into a prime example of a banner tree or flag tree (a variation of krummholz), where growth on the windward side is killed or deformed. A small waxing gibbous moon adds an additional point of interest in the sky. Eldorado National Forest, Sierra Nevada, El Dorado County, California, USA.
