Red Pinwheel (Marasmius plicatulus)

The red pinwheel or pleated Marasmius (Marasmius plicatulus) is an attractive mushroom which can be recognized by its mahogany to red cap, widely spaced pale gills, and shiny red stipe (stalk). This widespread species emerges from leaf litter in a variety of habitats and aids in the decomposition of forest debris across North America.
