Migratory Grasshopper (Melanoplus sanguinipes)

The migratory grasshopper (Melanoplus sanguinipes) is a common species of grasshopper also known as the lesser migratory grasshopper and red-legged grasshopper. It is very similar in appearance to the devastating grasshopper (M. devastator). According to wildlife biologist Alice Abela, there is some debate as to whether the two are even separate species, but Pacific Coast specimens are currently considered M. devastator, whereas individuals in the Sierra and eastward are considered M. sanguinipes.
